Based in International Crisis Group’s office in Hong Kong, the Researcher will undertake research and provide analysis for the Senior Adviser and other Crisis Group staff on relevant issues in North East Asia aimed at preventing or mitigating deadly conflict. The Researcher will assist to draft reports and other publications. S/he will assist with preparations for publicity and advocacy initiatives including dialogue events and publication launches, as well as supporting the meeting and appointments schedule of the Senior Adviser. The Researcher will also ensure the smooth operation of the office.

Job Description

Specific responsibilities:

  • Responds to research requests from the Senior Adviser, Program Director, and others in the organisation and gathers information and data on Asia from primary and secondary sources relating to Crisis Group’s mandate and workplan;

  • Organises research and advocacy meetings, including dialogue events and publication launch events;

  • Assists with drafting Crisis Group reports and other publications including proofreading;

  • Drafts correspondence and facilitates engagement for senior Crisis Group staff with academic, civil society, government, media, and private sector contacts and organisations;

  • Assists with contact management of media relations, stakeholders, advocacy and donor relations;

  • Coordinate translations of Crisis Group outputs;

  • Ensures the smooth functioning of the office, including scheduling meetings and appointments, tracking events and conferences and organising travel;

  • Supports recruitment and supervision of interns;

  • Provides other general support as directed.

 

Requirements

  • Passion for conducting research,  promoting peace and making a difference in the world;

  • A university or other relevant qualification in international relations, political science, conflict studies or related field;

  • A minimum of 2 years of professional experience;

  • Good knowledge of China and East Asian security and foreign policy issues;

  • Fluency in English and Mandarin Chinese (knowledge of Cantonese, Japanese, or Korean would be an asset);

  • Good writing ability, attention to detail and organisational skills;

  • Experience working successfully within a team as well as the ability to work independently in a fast-paced and often demanding environment.
