Position Summary

The Resident Assistant is responsible, with the other residence hall staff, for fostering a cooperative and considerate educational community environment which contributes to the academic, personal growth, and success, of each resident while serving as a positive role model. They are also responsible for assisting students with both personal and academic concerns. This position is working with primarily Chinese high school students in a student housing center.

Specific Responsibilities and Tasks
*Living & Cultural Responsibilities

  • Submit weekly reports/logs supervising personnel.
  • Perform nightly head counts to ensure all students are present after curfew.
  • Assist with any opening and closing responsibilities each term, including orientation.
  • Ensure the physical and emotional wellbeing of students
  • Serve as a positive role model for students to follow – academically and otherwise.
  • Treat confidential information with sensitivity and integrity.
  • Conflict resolution, particularly related to cultural differences/issues.
  • Support students in areas related to the transition into American culture.
  • Assist developing student’s time/self-management, health, and wellness skills.
  • Collaborate with other RAs to create and maintain a well planned activity calendar.
  • Create weekly or monthly themes for decor that will introduce students to different aspects of American culture in a fun, yet educational manner.
  • Plan, coordinate, and supervise monthly weekend activities for students to enhance their experience and knowledge of American culture. Potentially including, but not limited to: Scheduling transportation, booking accommodations for overnight trips, and creating and following a budget for said outings.

Academic Responsibilities

  • Assist and report to the Resident Executive Director
  • Potentially work with/support other staff members to prepare students for the SAT and TOEFL. Including, but not limited to: study plans, tests prep, study sessions, and test taking instructions.
  • Encourage and guide students to continually improve their English language skills.
  • Assist students in completing class assignments that they struggle to comprehend.
  • Offer support for students struggling to adjust to the American education system – i.e. tips on how to succeed academically (note taking, how to succeed in group studying)
  • Communicate with supervising personnel to inform them of any academic concerns.

Reporting Relationship

Resident Assistants report directly to the Executive Director of the Weiming Student Center

Required Qualification

Education
Bachelor degree in any discipline, preferably education and/or social work
Working experience
1-3 years work experience, preferably in the education field and having worked directly with students.
Personal skills
Excellent communication skills. Enthusiastic about working with international students. Self motivated.
Language skills
Native language level English proficiency. Ability to listen, speak and read Chinese is an asset, but not required.
Other requirements
Must submit to and be able to successfully pass a fingerprinted background check.

Highly Desirable Candidates will possess

  • Knowledge of Chinese culture and the Chinese education. -Not required
  • Experience working in culturally diverse environments. – Not required
