Job Description
ANTICIPATED EMPLOYMENT DATES
May 15 – June 17, 2017 (part-time, remote in the U.S.); June 18 – August 5, 2017 (three-day orientation in New York, NY; then full-time in Zhuhai, China).
JOB SUMMARY
The Resident Director (RD) represents the International Education and Resource Network-China (iEARN-China) and iEARN-USA in his/her activities during the tenure of their appointment. The RD serves as a cultural and academic liaison for students during their overseas program. The RD is the primary support person for all students and is responsible for on-going monitoring of the safety and well-being of students. The RD must be available to student on a daily basis; observe students’ classes; and, be available via phone to students in case of emergency. Responsibilities include communicating with iEARN staff in China and the U.S., counseling of individual students, attending classes and cultural activities, and conducting host family visits.
Prior to departure, the RD will be required to attend an on-line or in-person training session and a pre-departure orientation organized by iEARN-USA. In May, RDs will begin part-time work remotely in coordination with iEARN-USA on pre-program language support, orientation planning, conference calls and webinars with students, and logistical support. RDs are required to travel with their respective student groups at the beginning of their programs and return to the U.S. with the group at the end of their programs.
RDs report to iEARN-China Program Manager and iEARN-USA.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Pre-Program:
- Work closely with iEARN-China and iEARN-USA to design and deliver five-week online language prep curriculum for students to teach them basic phrases and common characters. You can use any online platform (e.g., Adobe Connect, Google Hangouts);
- Support pre-program language development;
- Support pre-program communication with students through webinars, conference calls, and editing pre-departure materials;
- Co-facilitate and plan student pre-departure orientation sessions in New York; and
- Perform administrative tasks as needed including reviewing student information and other program materials.
On-Program:
- Lead individual and group debriefing sessions with students to enhance learning experience and cultural understanding. Debriefing sessions will include a mid-program meeting and a re-entry orientation to be conducted prior to the group’s return to the U.S.;
- Hold at least one in-person meeting/check-in with each student during the program;
- Travel with students on all program related activities;
- Submit weekly reports to iEARN-China program manager and iEARN-USA program staff, as well as final report and individual student evaluations;
- Work as a member of the iEARN-China program team to maintain program quality consistent with program goals, and offer consistent guidance to students;
- Assist iEARN-China with conducting visits to each student’s host family;
- Meet frequently with iEARN-China to share about and discuss any information that would be helpful for the students, both in terms of their safety/well-being and their language development; and,
- Perform any related duties or special projects as directed by supervisor.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree or higher, or rising college senior, depending on previous work and travel experiences;
- Fluent English language skills, Conversant to fluent Mandarin Chinese language ability;
- Study, work, or extensive experience in China and with Chinese culture;
- Familiarity with U.S. high school life and culture;
- Proven ability to work with and lead high school students;
- Demonstrated skills in academic and personal counseling or Residential Life;
- Must be able to pass a criminal background check; and
- Candidate must have experience living in the U.S. and China.
Compensation is TBD and commensurate with experience.
