The Position

China Institute is seeking a part-time staff member to manage its Study Tours in China program. Candidates must be proficient in Chinese, highly motivated, organized and interested in being part of a culturally diverse team. They must also be innovative and flexible, and interested in devoting time and energy to developing program content for various participants including students, educators and general public.

The Resident Director must also possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills in both English and Chinese, the ability to interface with the public in a professional, friendly manner, Chinese language proficiency, and a readiness to live in China for the duration of the study tours (ranging from 10 days to 6 weeks); an MA degree and experience living and traveling in China highly desirable.

The Resident Director will report directly to the Director of Education while working very closely with other programs within the Education Department. Currently China Institute runs two Summer Study in China programs for high school students during the summer, and is actively working with schools in New York area to organize school trips during the spring break.

Specific Responsibilities

  • • Supervise the execution of all aspects of the program, including communication with the host school or partner organization(s) and the host family (if any), managing the program team in China, and coordinating with other programs at China Institute as needed;
  • • Recruit, manage and supervise the program team;
  • • Supervise and work closely with program staff to develop content, extra-curricular activities and community service as needed;
  • • Develop program related materials including, but not limited to, job descriptions, the final program report, expense report and other materials as necessary;
  • • Manage the program budgets and assist developing program budgets;
  • • Coordinate with colleagues to plan and carry out program marketing and recruitment, including phone calls, web-based outreach, on-site school visits, open house events and other activities;
  • • Oversee the application, admission and acceptance process, including producing and distributing applications, interviewing and accepting applicants, investigating financial needs, and reviewing scholarship applications;
  • • Organize and conduct pre-program orientations and post-program follow-up activities for participating students and parents, host families and partner school/organization staff;
  • • Manage the alumni network as a result of the program to ensure long-term connection with former participants;
  • • Assist in developing program-related grant applications and all grant-related reporting, as needed;
  • • Coordinate with other programs at China Institute to ensure consistency in program design and management, as well as to maximize the impact of the programs.
