Job Description

The International Trademark Association (INTA) is a global not-for-profit association of trademark owners and professionals dedicated to supporting trademarks and related intellectual property in order to protect consumers and to promote fair and effective commerce.  Central to INTA’s success in servicing its members is the implementation of its strategic plan.  INTA is a membership-based association with departments that are responsible for:  public policy and advocacy; meetings and events; legal resources; membership acquisition and retention; marketing; communications, information technology; finance; and administration.  INTA has offices in New York City; Brussels; Santiago, Chile; Shanghai; Singapore; and Washington, DC. 

Assists in the development of positions and implementation of INTA strategies regarding such topics as amicus briefs, copyright, emerging issues and persona rights, working with senior management, relevant INTA departments and committees, the Asia-Pacific, China, Europe, Geneva, India, Latin America and Washington Representatives, government and international agencies, and other public and private organizations. 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

External Relations Duties

  • Makes recommendations and participates in the development of Association policies and positions on topics such as copyrights and persona rights, and new issues considered emerging in the area of trademark law and practice.
  • Guides and implements the amicus process and procedures.
  • Reviews and analyzes proposed legislation, regulations and judicial procedures regarding assigned topics and refers such matters to the appropriate committees and/or subcommittees for consideration.
  • Researches and drafts position papers, testimony, reports, speeches and correspondence that relate to assigned topics.
  • Contacts national government and international agencies for information on schedules, status of various pieces of legislative measures and proposed rules, contacts, etc.
  • Identifies and develops government relations opportunities for the Association, including representing the Association at various conferences and forums.
  • Acts as Association liaison with private sector interests with identical or similar goals on the local, national and international levels.       
  • Develops and maintains historical record of Association positions, policies, and appearances as they relate not only to assigned topics, but for all policies of the Association which emanate from the Advocacy Group.
  • Works with the Association’s Asia-Pacific, China, Europe, Geneva, India, Latin America and Washington Representatives to serve as the Association’s liaison with legislators and government executive agencies.
  • Responds to routine, as well as substantive written and telephone inquiries from members of the Association concerning assigned topics.
  • Drafts articles for the INTA web site and Bulletin.  Also consults with website and Bulletineditors on placement of stories on assigned topics that are written by Association members.
  • Assists the Education Department in identifying topics and speakers regarding assigned topics for roundtables, forums and programs during the Annual and Leadership Meetings
  • From time to time, contributes to Association and other commercial publications on assigned topics.  

Administration and Planning

  • Participates in and contributes to the development and execution of strategic and short range planning strategies and action plans designed to enhance the attainment of department and Association goals.
  • Serves as the liaison to assigned committees, particularly those relevant to topic areas to guide committees on Association policy framework.
  • Assures that the planned goals and objectives for all assigned projects and of the assigned committees and/or subcommittees are achieved within established time frames.
  • Works with other department members in selection of members for placement on committees and/or subcommittees.
  • Participates in the planning and scheduling of committee meetings throughout the year.
  • Works with Chief Policy Officer and related managers to maintain department quality performance expectations including timeliness, quality, policy, and objectives.
  • Searches and maintains Central Files pertaining to the topics which fall within assigned committees and/or subcommittees.
  • Creates and maintains departmental contact lists.

POSITIONREQUIREMENTS: 

  • Law degree with at least 10 years related work experience. Government relations experience a plus.
  • Excellent written/editing and oral communications skills, including interpersonal skills.
  • Proficient in the use of the Microsoft Office suite – Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to multi-task and work independently with minimal supervision.
