Based in China, the Assistant Resident Director will work with the NSLI-Y Program Manager and NSLI-Y Resident Director to implement the NSLI-Y program in China. Guidelines and reporting requirements for the position will be provided as part of Assistant NSLI-Y Resident Director training prior to the start of the assignment, as well as on an ongoing basis. The Assistant Resident Director takes daily direction and guidance from senior staff and understands that all tasks are to be performed in concurrence with the Resident Director and/or NSLI-Y Program Manager.

Job Description

This position will work in Beijing supporting the NSLI-Y Academic Year Program through May, and will preferably serve as Resident Director leading NSLI-Y students on an intensive Mandarin Chinese summer institute overseas for six weeks during the summer in China or Taiwan.

 

 

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (Assistant Resident Director):

 

  • Represent American Councils in actions and words during the tenure of the assignment;
  • Assist in the administration and daily operation of the NSLI-Y program in China;
  • Serve as a chaperone for a group of approximately 15 American high school students to and from China;
  • Be available to program participants and staff on a daily basis, at all hours, and respond to any requests that arise (i.e. be available 24/7);
  • Participate in and contribute to sessions during the student pre-departure orientation in Washington, DC;
  • Work with the Resident Director to advise program participants as needed on a variety of language learning, cultural, adjustment and logistical issues and offer individual support to participants, as instructed;
  • Work with the Resident Director to facilitate medical and other emergency assistance, as required;
  • Work with the Resident Director to maintain and enforce adherence to program rules and policies among participants;
  • Assist the Resident Director in organizing and implementing program events, including cultural enhancement and language practice activities, volunteer program activities, arrival, mid-program, and re-entry workshops for participants, as well as the host family orientation and farewell events;
  • Work with the Resident Director to assist with liaison activities with the host school;
  • Run weekly participant meetings either along with the Resident Director or individually if the Resident Director is away;
  • Perform duties during activities to foster student participation, vocabulary-building and spoken use of the target language;
  • Serve as language tutor to program participants, conduct individual and group review sessions and other language learning activities, including with local Chinese peers, as directed by the Resident Director;
  • Help arrange group logistics such as transportation and meals, and communicating with local partners and vendors;
  • Provide required support to arrange and facilitate applicable group arrangements;
  • Support Resident Director in working with host families, including maintaining weekly communication logs;
  • Work with Resident Director to track and provide proper financial documentation on program expenditures;
  • Report on program activities to Washington, D.C;
  • Collect and organize program photos, write newsletters and program updates and highlights;
  • Complete and participate in the Assistant Resident Director training, some of which is self-guided;
  • Resolve other program-related issues as necessary;
  • Complete select preparation assignments prior to the start of the program, including preparing materials for participants;
  • Perform other program-related tasks as directed.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Chinese, area studies or a related field;
  • Advanced written and oral language skills (minimum 2/2+ on DLPT scale, Advanced on ACTFL scale) in Chinese;
  • Study, work, or extensive travel experience in China and/or Taiwan;
  • Familiarity with the educational system in China and/or Taiwan;
  • Experience working in a position of authority with high school, undergraduate, or graduate students;
  • Experience overseeing and guiding groups;
  • Demonstrated skills in academic and personal counseling; and
  • Demonstrated skills in general financial accountability.
