BACKGROUND:
Headquartered in Toronto, Canada, Right To Play is a global organization that uses the transformative power of play to educate and empower children facing adversity. It was founded in 2000 by Johann Olav Koss, a four-time Olympic gold medalist and social entrepreneur. Through playing sports and games, we help children in more than 20 countries build essential life skills and better futures, while driving lasting social change. The kids we work with are often living with diseases like HIV and AIDS or are displaced in refugee camps, face gender discrimination or other daily challenges. In 2012, Right To Play reached 1 million children and youth in weekly regular sport and play activities in some of the most disadvantaged communities in the world. Nearly half of the children in our programs were girls.
Since the inception of its pilot programs in China in 2007, Right To Play China has been promoting the development of children affected by poverty and children in difficult situations. Right To Play China believes that only when these children actively participate in their own development, can such development be effective, holistic and sustainable. Right To Play China implements its programs through the following three strategic priorities.
• Promoting children to actively participate in their development through experiential learning methodology, including sport and play for development, that results in behavior change, increased capacity and holistic development;
• Building the organizational and technical capacity of government agencies and non-governmental organizations (NGOs), especially local Chinese organizations;
• Establishing a platform that links local needs with international and national best practice and resources.
Since 2007, Right To Play had already reached over 350,000 children from 19 provinces and municipalities throughout China.
